2014 Nissan Pathfinder Review

The already popular and much sought after classic Nissan Pathfinder is back in a new avatar in 2014 as an R52 variant. What has been known for many years as a sturdy and rugged off-road specialist with four wheel drive comes back in 2014 with numerous design and feature changes and much more focus on on-road driving. Nissan Australia’s MD and CEO Peter Jones states the new look Pathfinder as ‘perfect for families’.

Design

The new Pathfinder brings to the table elements that Nissan have used on their recent models. The design on the new Pathfinder is distinctly more aerodynamic and more in tune with use on urban roads and areas. Tri-zone climate control reversing, 7inch infotainment screen, Bluetooth support, auto headlights, full five-star ANCAP safety rating, hills assist and 18-inch alloys are some of the key features available.

The higher variants boast of stronger feature sets such as twin infotainment screens at the back, 9GB storage for multimedia and 8inch front screen with satnav capabilities. The two back rows of seats are fitted with proprietary Nissan EZ Flex system which provides easy access while providing significantly more leg room. The rear row of seats can be folded away to make space for large amounts of luggage. This makes the Pathfinder a segment winner for interior space.

Performance

The 2014 Nissan Pathfinder runs on petrol unlike its previous diesel predecessors. The 3.5 litre engine enables a satisfactory 190kW/325Nm across its different variants and uses CVT Auto transmission. We feel that a turbocharged diesel version would have notched up its range of offerings. The engine is surprisingly quiet and is dexterous at steep driving.

The vehicle comes in both front wheel and four wheel drive variants. Driving the new Pathfinder can be a fun experience as it effortlessly tackles city roads and rough terrain with relative ease.
