2014 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Review

4 years after it launched the first ever mass-produced electric car in Australia, Mitsubishi has stepped up the ante and announced the launch of the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV review. With this launch, Mitsubishi has also tried to bridge the gap between performance (out of its electric powered engine) and buyer expectations (better looking electric vehicles). 

Here we analyse the car’s performance on various parameters

Engine performance

A motor each on the front wheels and rear wheels almost make the Outlander a perfect 4WD. The 2 litre petrol engine not only charges the battery but can also be switched on as an alternative driving fuel. This fact brings it much closer to traditional SUV’s than other electric vehicles. Having an additional power/fuel source will make it a good option for long off-road driving – a true blue test of an SUV’s sturdiness.

A test drive reveals a powerful engine beneath the bonnet that stays smooth and pleasantly quiet. It handled the sharp turns, and a good traction and displayed a powerful torque – features displayed by traditional 4WD SUV’s.


Mitsubishi claims it is the first PHEV that can be charged by plugging it to a 15-amp power source. In case homeowners use high load appliances such as air conditioning they might already have such points into their home’s wiring systems. A full charge takes approximately five hours and can last for 50km of city driving. While the battery is placed under the body, it doesn’t impact the ground clearance much.


With a 5-star rating by Australasian New Car Assessment Program, the Outlander has the necessary safety measures in place.


This is the sweetest part of the entire deal. At a tag of $47,490 it easily takes on the top contenders of medium-range SUV category and emerges the winner. The premium PHEV Aspire version will retail at $52,490. In fact it comes cheaper than the purely electric i-MiEV from the same manufacturer that was launched in 2010.
