Honda CR-V DTi-L New Car Review

Honda is not exactly known for churning out diesel based SUV’s. But when they did finally go ahead with the launch of the new CR-V diesel version, it was bang on the mark with power and looks. Though it jumped in very late in the diesel SUV bandwagon in Australia, Honda has managed to debut its diesel line-up with a decent launch in form of the driveability and fuel economy of the CR-V DTi-L.

Engine performance

A four-cylinder 2.2 turbodiesel leaves a bit to be desired especially when comparing with other similarly sized vehicles such as the Mazda CX-5. For Honda though this is a stepping stone to launch better diesel variants in the near future. Even the performance of 110 Kw and 350Nm torque peak seems to be sadly outmatched by similar models such as Mitsubishi Outlander and Mazda CX-5. However not all is gloom here. For a diesel engine, the car is remarkably smooth and quiet even when accelerating from a stationary position.

With two variants of transmission available, the car revs up beautifully to the throttle, handles sharp turn admirably and cruises much more effortlessly than most petrol vehicles. This makes the light weight compact SUV an ideal car for city driving. However the older 5 speed auto and lack of auto start/stop snatches away valuable brownie points from what would have otherwise been the perfect debut diesel vehicle from Honda.

Safety

Features such as stability control, six airbags, brake assist, ABS and reversing camera results in a five-star ANCAP rating. The car scores well on safety points due to these reasons.

Pricing

At the degree of engine and performance it offers, we feel that the car is a tad overpriced at $38,290 (for manual) and $40,590 (for automatic)
