What happens if I leave my job during the lease?

The lease is in your name, not your employer's. If you change jobs, you can re-novate the lease with your new employer, take over the payments yourself, or pay the lease out early. Tell us when it happens and we'll walk you through it.

What's covered if I have an accident?

Accepted Answer

Comprehensive vehicle insurance is included in your regular payment. You can use our preferred insurance provider or source your own. If you have an accident, lodge it with your insurer; we'll help where we can. Accident management is available as an optional add-on if you'd rather we coordinate the claim and the repair.

What happens at the end of the lease?

Accepted Answer

Three months out, your consultant will walk you through your options. You can buy the car at the residual, take out a new lease on the same car* or roll into a new lease with a new car. Most drivers know what they want by then.

*Conditions apply. The car can't be more than seven years old at the end of the lease, or valued below $5,000.

What if I spend less than the budget over the year?

Accepted Answer

Anything left in your running-cost budget at the end of the lease comes back to you through payroll, taxed as income. If you're on track to spend more than your budget, we'll be in touch during the lease to adjust your deduction so you're not caught out at the end.

Can I add accessories?

Accepted Answer

Accessories may be able to be added at the start of the lease, depending on the car, and can be financed as part of the package. Talk to your consultant about what's possible.

What is Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)?

Accepted Answer

FBT is a tax on benefits employers provide to employees in addition to salary. A novated lease is treated as a fringe benefit, which is why a portion of the running cost can sometimes come out of post-tax pay. Eligible electric vehicles attract no FBT payable, but the benefit is still reportable. The ATO has the full picture at ato.gov.au.

Is it better to buy a car outright or take a novated lease?

Accepted Answer

It depends on your situation. A novated lease can mean no upfront deposit, budgeted bundled costs and potentially reduced taxable income, particularly with eligible EVs. Buying outright avoids the lease structure altogether but means you handle the running costs and the budgeting yourself. How does a novated lease compare to a personal loan?

Accepted Answer

A personal loan is funded after tax and managed by you. A novated lease is funded through salary packaging, with the running costs bundled in and managed by StreetFleet. Different structures, different outcomes. Talk to your consultant if you want to compare like for like.

Does the FBT exemption last for the whole lease?

Accepted Answer

For eligible BEVs yes, for the life of the lease. For PHEVs, the exemption applied only to leases first held before 1 April 2025. New PHEV arrangements after that date don't qualify, although existing PHEV leases keep the exemption for the life of the lease they're on. Is the EV "FBT-free" then?

Accepted Answer

Not exactly. There's no FBT payable on an eligible EV novated lease, but the benefit is still reportable on your payment summary. The reportable amount can affect government benefits like HECS, the Medicare Levy Surcharge and Family Tax Benefit assessments.

What if the EV I want is over the luxury car threshold?

Accepted Answer

You can still lease it, but the FBT exemption doesn't apply. The lease reverts to standard novated treatment with a post-tax FBT contribution. The structure still works; the indicative figures are different. Your consultant will model both options if you're close to the threshold.

How does electricity charging work on the lease?

Accepted Answer

Two options, depending on your setup. If you charge primarily on public networks, your fuel card extends to electricity charging at participating stations. If you charge at home, we run a reimbursement model based on your home electricity usage and a fixed kilometre rate. Yes, where they qualify. To meet the FBT exemption, the vehicle's payload capacity must not exceed one tonne, and it must sit within the luxury car tax threshold. We'll check eligibility for the specific car you're considering before any quote is finalised.

How does servicing work for EVs?

Accepted Answer

EVs need fewer services than petrol vehicles. No oil changes, fewer fluids, less brake wear due to regenerative braking. Manufacturer-recommended service intervals are typically every 12 months or 15,000 to 30,000 km depending on the make and model. Servicing books through your local service centre, the same way as a petrol vehicle.

Can I lease one of those big EV utes?

Accepted Answer

Eligibility comes down to two things: price (under the fuel-efficient LCT threshold) and payload capacity (the vehicle must not exceed a one-tonne payload to count as a "car" for FBT purposes; vehicles over one tonne are treated differently). We'll check both for the specific ute you're considering before any quote is finalised.

How long does the whole process take from quote to keys?

Accepted Answer

Usually two to six weeks for a new car, one to three weeks for a used car. Pay deduction setup and finance approval are the gating items in the first two weeks; vehicle delivery is the gating item after that.

What if I've already got a quote elsewhere?

What if my employer doesn't currently offer salary packaging?

Accepted Answer

We can set it up. Most employers say yes once they understand it costs them nothing and carries no risk to them. Our payroll team has standard documentation that works with most HR systems.

Can I change cars mid-lease?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but it usually involves ending the existing lease and starting a new one. Your consultant will model the cost of the change before you commit. In some cases the maths works fine; in others it makes more sense to wait for end of term.

What if I leave my employer during the lease?

Accepted Answer

Notify us in writing as soon as you know. The novation agreement with your employer ends, and you become the lessee until the lease is settled. You can transfer the lease to a new employer (if they can run salary packaging), pay it out early, or continue paying as a personal lease. Your consultant will run the reconciliation within five business days of notification.

How are kilometres tracked?

Accepted Answer

Three ways: at petrol stations when you give your kilometre reading on payment, at services when the workshop captures the odometer, or by manual entry through the Digital Drivers Guide. Most drivers do a combination of all three. The driver's guide shows actual against allowance whenever you log in.

What if I need to claim a reimbursement?

Accepted Answer

Submit through the online reimbursement form. Approved reimbursements are paid via EFT to your nominated account, drawn from your running cost budget. Reimbursed amounts are paid through payroll and are taxable as income or it can be applied to your novated lease account for future spending.

How old can a used car be?

Accepted Answer

For a used-car lease, the car typically needs to be under twelve years old at the end of the lease term, so a four-year-old car can usually go onto a five-year lease. For sale-and-leaseback of a car you already own, the car can't be more than seven years old at the end of the lease term, or valued below $5,000 at sale. We'll confirm specifics for the car you're considering.

What if I still have finance on the car I already own?

Accepted Answer

We'll settle the existing finance as part of the sale-and-leaseback. The valuation we offer is the market value of the car; if there's finance owing, that comes off the cash you receive. If the loan balance is more than the market value, we'll talk through options before any agreement is signed.

How is the market value determined for the car I own?

Accepted Answer

We use independent valuation sources, cross-checked against trade-in benchmarks for the make, model, age and condition. We share this with you before sign-off; there are no surprise numbers.

Is the structure the same as a new-car lease?

Accepted Answer

The salary packaging structure is the same. The GST saving on the car purchase only applies to eligible new cars within the luxury car threshold; it doesn't apply to used cars or sale-and-leaseback. Indicative figures for your situation can be provided in an estimate.

What about end of lease?

On the used-car path, the options are the same as for a new car: buy at the residual, take out a new lease on the same car (subject to the seven-year / $5,000 conditions on the new term), or roll into a new lease with a new car. On the sale-and-leaseback path, the same options apply at the end of the leaseback term, with the same age-and-value conditions.

Accepted Answer

The lease moves with you when you change jobs, as long as your new employer can run salary packaging. If they can't, you have options: pay the lease out, transfer to a new employer, or continue paying as a personal lease.

You can. The novated lease arrangement doesn't change your ability to claim work-related travel; it just changes how the car is paid for.
